How to Put Your Business on Google Maps
Getting your business onto Google Maps costs nothing and takes about twenty minutes of typing. The part that stalls people for weeks is verification — and you don't get to choose how it's done.
«how do I put my business on google maps»
A Google Business Profile —formerly Google My Business— is the free listing that puts your business on Maps and in the block of three businesses that shows above the search results. For a small business in Panama it’s the cheapest thing you can fix and the fastest one to show — and almost nobody here has it complete.
The twenty minutes
- Search for your business on Google first. If a profile already exists, claim it instead of creating a second one. Duplicates get suspended.
- Create the profile at google.com/business with the email you actually use for the business, not a personal one you’ll lose access to.
- Choose the primary category carefully. It’s the strongest single factor in the local results. Search the picker for the words your customer would use.
- Fill in everything. Services one by one with their descriptions, hours, service area, phone, and the link to your site. An empty field is a reason for Google to show somebody else.
- Add photos. Storefront, interior, team, work done. Not two pictures from four years ago.
Verification: Google picks, not you
This is where most people stall. Google decides the method and usually doesn’t offer an alternative:
- Video. You record or join a call showing the premises, your equipment and proof that you run the business. Usually resolved within days.
- Postcard. Google mails a code to the address. In Panama this can take weeks, and it depends on the postal service, not on Google.
While the profile is unverified it doesn’t show anywhere. That’s the whole reason verification matters: an unverified profile is the same as no profile.
The two fields most people get wrong
Categories. The primary one is the strongest single factor in whether you appear for a search like «bakery near me». Pick it from the words your customer uses, not your internal vocabulary, and check the picker before assuming a category exists: the label Google shows in the results isn’t always the name you choose it by. Secondary categories are free and worth adding for everything you genuinely do.
Services. Most profiles leave this empty, which is why most profiles lose to the one that filled it in. Load each service with its own short description, in the words people search for. It’s twenty minutes of typing that keeps paying.
After it’s live
- Ask for reviews. From every customer, without offering anything in exchange.
- Answer them, including the bad ones. That reply is read by the next person sizing you up.
- Keep the hours right. Somebody arriving at five to a closed door doesn’t come back.
- Post now and then. A profile that hasn’t moved in a year reads as a business that might be closed.
If Google suspends the profile
It happens, and the most common causes are avoidable: a second duplicate profile, a home address left visible on a service-area business, a category that doesn’t match what the business does, or a sudden burst of reviews that look bought. Reinstatement is a form, and it goes better when the profile matches reality everywhere else —your site, your invoices, your social accounts— because that’s what Google checks.
What a profile can’t do
It puts you on the map, and that’s a lot. What it can’t do is explain a service that needs explaining, hold the copy that makes you rank for what you sell, or give you somewhere to send a customer who wants detail before calling. That’s the website’s job, and the two work together: the profile gets you found locally, the site closes the visit.
If what you need is the profile plus a site that Google can actually read, that’s what our web design work covers — the profile is included in all three plans, because a site without one is half a tool.
Also worth asking
How long does verification take?
The video call or recording is usually resolved within days. The postcard is the slow one: it depends on the postal service, and in Panama it can take several weeks. If it doesn't arrive, you can request another one — what you should not touch is «reset verification», which starts the whole process again from zero.
Can I use my home address?
Yes, and it's the normal setup for a business that visits its customers. Google keeps the address to verify you and to calculate how close you are to whoever is searching, and it doesn't publish it. Two warnings: it has to stay hidden —a business working from a house with a visible address ends up suspended— and even hidden it still affects where you show up.
What if a profile for my business already exists?
Then you claim it instead of creating a new one. Duplicates are one of the fastest ways to get a profile suspended, and the existing listing usually already has reviews you don't want to lose.
Which category should I choose?
The primary category is the single strongest factor in whether you show up in the local results, so it's worth the five minutes. Search the category picker for the word your customer would use, not the one you use internally, and pick the closest match. You can add secondary categories afterwards.
Do reviews matter that much?
They matter, but less than people assume: the profile itself weighs more than the reviews on it. Three honest reviews put you in the running; zero keeps you out of it. Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, and never offer anything in exchange — that's against Google's rules and it's the kind of thing that gets a profile removed.
